 HomeCollecting Judy: Photographs
HomeCollecting Judy
Photos are a collecting area that is very affordable. Black and white stills (restrikes) are going for $3.00 - $5.00, color for a few bucks more. Original photos run anywhere from about $5.00 to about $25.00. Restrikes are photos which have been made from a negative that was shot from an original print (second generation copy). Most restrikes are not quite as nice as the original, but originals of Judy are much harder to find, so restrikes may be your only choice for many photos. Restrikes are fine for framing or putting in an album.

Restrikes or originals, there are plenty to choose from, and they are not hard to find! Judy must have been one of the most photographed stars of all time - I have about 700 publicity photos and movie stills in my collection, and continue to find new ones all the time!

Most photos from the movie industry measure 8" by 10". They are often called "eight-by-tens", "stills" or "glossies". They are actual photographs, and are very nice for framing. "Movie stills" are pictures that are taken on the set as a movie is being filmed. "Publicity" photos are taken in a photography studio for the purpose of promoting a movie or a star. Publicity photos of a female star are often called "glamour photos".

Originals, though harder to find, are often more fun. They are usually much better quality than restrikes, and they often have interesting captions on the back. I have selected a few originals from my collection to display on this page. Be sure to see the Judy Garland Photo Gallery here on the Judy Garland Database!

The photo to the right is one of my prize catches. We've all seen this picture of Judy in books, but this is an original photo! I don't know how many of these can be around, but there can't be many. It was taken in the summer of 1934 in Chicago by Bloom studios. The emulsion has minute cracks in it, the paper is very old, brittle and yellowing. I don't know if Judy's mother, Ethel, had this photo taken, or if the agent they signed with in Chicago had it taken. This one has old glue marks on the back, so it may well have been glued to a poster at a theater. I don't really know what the photo was used for, but it's fun to have an original photo of 12-year-old Baby Gumm!

This is an original publicity photo for Babes in Arms, 1939. On the back, it is stamped with a Dell Publishing property stamp which indicates a received date of September 12, 1939. Could this be the very photo Dell used to make the cover picture of Modern Screen, issued February 1940? The pictures are obviously identical except that the magazine cover has been colorized and touched up. Note how the artist changed Judy's sweater! And he added bells in her hair. And on the cover, the glass has the Pepsi logo on it! Is this an early example of product placement? The artist's signature (Earl Christy) is evident on Judy's left shoulder on the cover.

Sometimes originals are fun just because they are old and something you've never seen before. I've never seen this photo reproduced in a book, in a magazine or as a restrike. This is an original photo from 1937 - a publicity still for Thoroughbreds Don't Cry. I scanned this one in color so you can see how it has yellowed a bit with age. I have several originals from this film, including two which have been tinted (colorized).

This is an original fashion photo from 1939. I've never seen this one anywhere else, either. There is a caption typed on a piece of paper and glued to the back of the photo which reads:

EXCLUSIVE

HOLLYWOOD FASHIONS ON PARADE

Judy Garland, Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer singing starlet, boasts a new evening dress featuring hand-painted flowers scattered over the yards of wide white taffeta skirt. Tiny taffeta bolero with wide shoulders covers the modestly cut decollete, making the frock suitable for dinner as well as dancing. Judy will soon be seen in M-G-M's "The Wizard of Oz," under the direction of Victor Fleming.
