 HomeCollecting Judy: Books
HomeCollecting Judy
Specific books about Judy Garland are not always easy to locate, but you can find a few Judy books at nearly any used bookstore and at many new bookstores. Check your local library, and if there is a used book store in your area, keep an eye on it.

Watch for general movie books, too - many books about movies have articles on Judy. Also, read books by other stars. For example, Buddy Ebsen talks a little bit about Judy in his recently published autobiography. June Allyson's autobiography has a lot of anecdotes about Judy, as does (of course) Vincente Minelli's and Liza's. Just about any biography of one of Judy's contemporaries will have at least some mention of Judy.

For a nearly complete list of Judy Garland books, as well as many other books that contain information on Judy, see the Judy Garland in Books page right here on the Judy Garland dataBase.

At the top-right of this page is a picture of a book called "Judy Garland and the Hoodoo Costume." In the 1940s, Whitman published a series of novels for young people, each of which had one of the most popular movie stars of the period as a main character. This is one of those books; it is the only book of its type featuring Judy, as far as I know. It's fun reading, and I recommend it, but it is not biographical at all. It's pure fiction, and the main character is Judy.

The Big Little Book (right) was also published by Whitman, in 1940, and is fun reading, but most of the information presented was provided by the MGM publicity department, so it is not very accurate.

The stores and dealers in the column to the left are good sources for books on Judy Garland and on movies. I have found good books at all of these stores. Larry Edmunds, right on Hollywood Blvd, has the best selection of books on Judy (and others) I've ever seen in one place. I've found more Judy books in their store than in any other single place. They also sell some memorabilia.
