DVD Review: Pigskin Parade
(1936, Black & White, 93 min.)
Director: David Butler
Song, dance and romance hit the field in this musical comedy that is sure to bring cheers for its winning team of Hollywood all-stars, including Jack Haley, Betty Grable and fresh-faced Judy Garland years before she wandered
down the yellow brick road of Oz!
When tiny Texas State University is mistakenly invited to play Yale University in a football game, the unlikely match pits barefoot hillbillies against gridiron go-getters! New coach Slug Winters (Haley) tries to get his
team prepared for the tough match, but when his wife Bessie (Patsy Kelly) injures their star player, she solicits students Chip (Johnny Downs) and Laura (Grable) to help her find a replacement. Melon-tossing bumpkin,
Amos (Stuart Erwin) might fit the bill, but he won't go without his pigtailed sister, Sairy (Garland)!
. . .
Fox has been quietly churning out DVDs of musicals and other classics from their extensive library for several years now. The restorations are beautiful, as is the packaging! I don't know about anyone else, but I hope they
keep it up! Thanks again, Fox! [JJ]
