1990 Presents Dorothy Doll

This is the 1990 Dorothy doll by Presents of California, a division of Hamilton Gifts, Ltd. An import from China, this doll was originally issued in 1988 for the 50th anniversary of the movie, along with the Scarecrow, Tinman and Lion. But Dorothy was taken off the market shortly after she was released. Her face was redesigned to look more like Judy, and the doll was re-issued in 1990.

She has a soft-sculpture (cloth) body and vinyl legs, arms and head. She stands 13 inches tall and comes with a straw basket and a plastic Toto. The stand is an optional accessory, designed to look like the Yellow-Brick Road. Stands are interlocking so that the dolls can be made to look like they are lined up on the Yellow-Brick Road.

Many of the other Oz characters were ultimately included in this set: the Scarecrow, Tinman, Lion, Glinda, Wicked Witch of the West, three munchkins, and the Wizard of Oz. Dorothy is cute, but really nothing special. She does bear a slight resemblance to Judy from certain angles. Her costume is reasonably accurate, although the dress is too long. She has knee-length white bloomers, but no petticoat. The shoes are made of red plastic, and the stockings are made of a thick blue material.

I think the doll is still in production. I bought both of mine in Hollywood (there are millions of 'em there!). They cost around $30-$40, depending on where you get them. I've seen this doll in many movie memorabilia stores around the country (as of 1998).
