Film Review: "We Must Have Music

"We Must Have Music"

MGM, 1942 (BW, 10 minutes)

Full title: "A New Romance of Celluloid: We Must Have Music"

Short subject released by MGM in 1942; a publicity film describing the workings of the MGM music department. It is an interesting film in that it contains many movie clips and sound clips from MGM films of the period. It also includes a quick series of shots of some of the major stars at MGM at the time, and it is fun to try to name them as they go by. The short, however, really has nothing to do with Judy other than the fact that it contains a number of clips of her. Most notably, the number We Must Have Music (for which the short was named) is a segment of the outtake from Ziegfeld Girl. There is also a short clip of Judy, Mickey and Company rehearsing the Hoe Down number from Babes on Broadway, with Busby Berkeley.

Notes

The complete soundtrack of the outtake from Ziegfeld Girl is currently available from Rhino as part of a 2-CD set entitled "Judy Garland: Collectors' Gems from the M-G-M Films" (R2 72543).

A video clip of Judy's musical number in the film is included in the laser disc box set: "Judy Garland/The Golden Years at M-G-M" (MGM/UA ML104869).

The entire film, We Must Have Music, is included on the Ziegfeld Girl videotape and DVD from MGM/UA Home Video and Warner Home Entertainment, respectively.

See Judy Garland Movies on Video for information about the latest releases of home video and sountrack.
